SterlingNOW Construction Update – July 2019
Sterling College broke ground on the expansion of the Gleason Physical Education Center during a dedication ceremony on May 10. Expansion of the Gleason Center is the first of four construction projects funded by the SterlingNOW capital campaign.
Progress is quickly underway with the second project, the College’s new indoor Baseball and Softball Complex. This 6,000-square-foot facility is located west of the College’s tennis courts. This facility will serve during the 2019-20 school year as a temporary wellness center, as construction displaces the current weight room. In the fall of 2020, the facility will transition to be training space for the softball, baseball, track and cross-country programs and will include offices for coaches.
Initial work in the Gleason Center consists of renovating the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems for the locker rooms and the pool. A high-efficiency HVAC unit is being added for the pool along with new glass curtain walls that will add energy efficiency and beauty to the natatorium.
After being slowed by the heavy flooding in May and June, much of the dirt work is completed and the concrete slab is ready to be poured. Work to remove the brick fascia and to re-route the fiber optic lines is complete. When students return in August, all of the steel for the new building, including the auxiliary gym, will be in place.
